Keynote Speakers: Joanna and Steven Levy

Steven Levy
After 28 years teaching in classrooms K-12, Steven Levy is now an educational consultant, working independently and with EL Education. He guides teachers in designing service-based curriculum, engaging instructional practices, student owned assessments, and character development. He was recognized as the Massachusetts State Teacher of the Year (1993), and honored by the Disney American Teacher Awards as the national Outstanding General Elementary Teacher (1995). Mr. Levy was the recipient of the Joe Oakey Award for his national impact on project-based learning, and received the John F. Kennedy Prize for the teaching of history. Mr. Levy and his fourth grade students were designated “Conservation Heroes” by the National Park Service for their study of the effects of a local bike path on the environment and the community. Steve and JoannaMr. Levy has written various articles for educational journals, and his book, Starting From Scratch  (Heinemann, 1996), details some of the projects and students he has worked with in his elementary classrooms.

Joanna Levy
Joanna Levy directs the Elementary Program at New Covenant School in Arlington, Massachusetts, and has taught there for over 25 years.  She was named volunteer of the year for her 3rd and 4th grade project  “Writing the Lives of the Elderly.”  She is passionate about encouraging teachers in their creativity, spiritual growth, and joy in the art of teaching and has worked with faculties in India and the Dominican Republic.  Joanna and her husband Steven run a summer institute, “Deeper Learning in the Christian Classroom” for educators with a passion for Christ, a desire to be creative, and an eagerness to learn instructional practices that engage all students.

Modern Christians think of themselves as God’s image-bearers, sent out into the world to build, renew, and transform culture. But is thinking it enough? What do we actually love? As Smith points out in his new book, we all operate according to our deepest desires, and we may be unconsciously worshipping rival gods in all sorts of ways. How can we reshape our desires in order to answer God’s call? What sorts of spiritual habits do we need before we can truly connect our worldview with our worship? Join Smith as he digs into these questions and more on Thursday, October 27, 7:30 pm, in the Redeemer Auditorium.

James K.A. Smith teaches philosophy at Calvin College and is the author of numerous books, most recently You Are What You Love: The Spiritual Power of Habit. Redeemer University College and Edifide are pleased to host Smith during the conference for this special evening event:
